First Live Shot From An Airplane Used Two PC's

It's a Bird. It's a Plane. It's a Live Shot From 35,000 Feet
The Internet service on the plane sent the signal via satellite, while Mr. Knutsson used a Sony laptop and a Toshiba laptop computer-one for audio and one for video. He relied on a voice over Internet protocol service to send the audio signal and used a regular interruptible feedback earpiece to hear the anchors.
This seems strange to me.

Why did the Cyberguy have to use two PC's?

The second live shot should use a Mac with iChat.

Garden: A QuickTime Time-lapse Video

I've got a new entry up over on my Video Blog. Garden: A QuickTime Time-lapse Video.
Here's another easy way to shoot a video for the web. Well, it's relatively easy.

Setting Up - Hardware Requirements
In this example you don't need a video camera. Just a still digital camera that can take time-lapse photos.

For this project I took my Macintosh PowerBook and Canon S400 out into the yard. I attached the S400 up to a tripod and then connected it to the PowerBook via a USB cable.
Again, I used my video blog to try out something new, I created a web video using time-lapse photography.

Check out other Timpe-Lapse photography.

As Seen In TIME Magazine ASIA

If you missed it the first time, the article featuring me, See Me, Blog Me, just came out in Asia:
Boston-based music-video producer Steve Garfield, 46, is no ordinary blogger. Instead of simply posting his thoughts online in a chatty weblog like millions of others around the world, he links a Canon GL2 digital video camera to his laptop and uploads short clips of protest rallies, traffic short-cuts and even news events onto his personal Internet site.

Garfield belongs to a small but growing group of video bloggers, or vloggers, who are turning the Web into a medium in which it's possible that someday anyone could mount original programming, bypassing the usual broadcast networks and cable outlets. "My last entry was a news story about a local ice rescue, and this July I'm going to cover the Democratic Convention," says Garfield, who posts one or two new clips every month. "With cheaper digital cameras and cell phones that can also shoot video, more and more regular people like me will start becoming citizen journalists."
Now I'm waiting for the Today show to call.

That's why you can't swim in Jamaica Pond

Pondside (area of Jamaica Plain)
The Pondside neighborhood of Jamaica Plain is defined by Jamaica Pond, the 60-acre kettlehole that is so clean that the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority considers it an emergency source of drinking water for the City of Boston.
Mmm...water.

The Master Key

Outside, late afternoon.

Kids are coming out of an apartment building in Jamaica Plain. A woman drives up to the building enraged, "What are you kids doing coming out of my apartment building?"

"We're just storing our food in there."

At that moment, other kids come out of the garage with their bikes.

"And what are you doing in that garage."

"We keep our bikes in there."

The woman asks, "How do you get inside?"

One of the kids replies, "Oh, we have a master key."

"A master key?! Get all your stuff out and get out of here."

The kids take all their food and bikes and then start opening all the doors to all the houses in the neighborhood. The woman watches as the kids srart removing chairs and tables and all kinds of things from every house.

The woman goes into one of the houses to see what is going on.

One of the kids sees her and says, "Hey lady, what are you doing in here. First you are mad at us for storing stuff and now you're curious and coming into other peoples houses too."

"Tell me more about this 'master key'", she asks.

Watching Paint Dry kicks off today with a luxurious coating of smooth masonry paint in a verdant green. We estimate that the masonry paint could take some time to dry so you should be able to catch a few drips and interesting textures forming as the day progresses. Producers plan to install further spotlights later this evening which will heat up the paint and could lead to some cracks appearing and the possibility of some early flaking so stay tuned!

My Enthusiasm for On Demand has been Curbed

Last night I settled down to catch up on this past season's Curb Your Enthusiasm on Comcast's HBO On Demand.

So I scrolled over to HBO Series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, only to find that this year's episodes aren't there!

What have they done with this year's shows?

What are the rules?

How can live a life without TV recording rules?

Now I realize that I should have stuck with TiVo and recorded the shows myself.

Update:
There's an HBO schedule and it shows both NEW and LAST CHANCE shows.

Fantasia Barrino Voted 'American Idol'

In a very rare occurance for me, I was watching American Idol last night, live on TV, without TiVo.

Hey, I've been missing some pretty good commercials. Maybe I'll have to start watching them on my TiVo? Or not.

So Fantasia wins and hugs Diana. I'm waiting for the 'money shot'. Nothing. Nothing.

Then the camera gives us a wide shot from behind the stage. At that exact moment, Fantasia gives us the 'money shot', that you see pictured here.

What were we seeing at home at that exact moment? Not much. Just a wide shot.

I'm yelling at the TV, that's the shot that'll be in all the papers! Let's see it, let's see it!

Well, there it is.

For Some, the Blogging Never Stops
Tony Pierce started his blog three years ago while in search of a distraction after breaking up with a girlfriend. "In three years, I don't think I've missed a day," he said. Now Mr. Pierce's blog (www.tonypierce.com/blog/bloggy.htm), a chatty diary of Hollywood, writing and women in which truth sometimes mingles with fiction, averages 1,000 visitors a day.

Where some frequent bloggers might label themselves merely ardent, Mr. Pierce is more realistic. "I wouldn't call it dedicated, I would call it a problem," he said. "If this were beer, I'd be an alcoholic."

Will's release reminds me of a book I wrote that was never published. It's all about my radio career. It wasn't published because one of the chapters had all the jokes I wrote about the news of the day. Since I couldn't provide sources for each news related joke, that chapter was deleted and then the book was too short.

So I put it up on the web for free.

Copy Above or Below

Forget copy and paste. This is quicker. This will duplicate the clip directly above or below the original clip. The benefit over the previous method for copying: this one doesn't do an insert once its copied, so the rest of the Timeline is left intact.

1. Select a clip, a portion of a clip, or multiple clips.
2. Press and hold Shift/Option and drag to another track (straight up or down).

Next the video clip is copied as its dragged upward one track.

Opening Bins As Tabs In the Browser

This one is cool. Normally, double-clicking on a bin in the Browser results in a new window opening. But your screen can get cluttered this way and you'll find yourself constantly moving around windows.

Instead, hold down the Option key, and double click on the icon for a bin in the Browser.

Participatory Democracy

Participatory Democracy - Photo Album.

Had a lot of fun going to see and experience my friend Ravi Jain's group exhibit today:
Participatory Democracy (May 7 to July 29, 2004) is a ground-breaking exploratory art exhibition that will investigate three forms of interactivity: the first between the artists creating the exhibited works, the second between the artists and the audience, and the third between the audience and the artworks themselves. Featured work ranges from video and photography to performance and installation art.
It's not every day where you can participate in a work of art, have fun, and confirm your decision to vote out of office the current president of the United States.

Jeff Warmouth took me behind the scenes to explain how he triggers the Skee Ball voting device to trip an electonic switch that sends a keyboard command to a Macintosh which in turn activates a Flash program function. Very cool.

Loose Lips by Claire Berlinski

Read the first chapter of Loose Lips for free. Here's an excerpt:
On the morning of my first day at the CIA, I dressed in a fresh cream winter suit with gold buttons and brocade trim. I wore silk panties, sheer nylons, pearls that looked real and earrings to match. My Ferragamo pumps came from a thrift store, but they didn't look it. I put expensive serum in my hair to make it straight and shiny, and I wore three very thin gold bracelets with my watch. I checked myself in the mirror one last time before I left: I decided I would have looked right at home in the photograph on the CIA Website.

Call now.

Sign the FIX THE POTHOLES petition

This just in from Maura A. Hennigan:
Dear Friends,

As part of my ongoing struggle to combat street and sidewalk hazards (potholes) in the city, I am releasing a petition which calls upon Mayor Menino to instruct his Commissioner of Public Works to release the over $22 million dollars (according to a Boston Globe editorial last year) that the city has in a private utility/contractor deposit fund. This money is supposed to be used to make permanent repairs - but it's not being used as intended. I want it released immediately to repair the many street and sidewalk hazards in the city so we can prevent further injury, inconvenience, or damage to people or their property.

For your convenience, the problem sidewalk and street petition (potholes) is available online at: http://www.petitiononline.com/p123/petition-sign.html;
will be available in neighborhood stores; or you can request a copy from my office so you can gather signatures from your friends, family and neighbors. Although I hope many of you will sign the petition, I really need your help to spread the word. You can spread the word by passing this onto your
friends, printing out the attached petition and gathering your own signatures, or lastly you can post it up in public places (bulletin boards, shops, libraries, etc.) all across the city.

In closing, I cannot do this job alone. I need your help to put pressure on the administration so they understand that this is an issue that cannot dismiss. Bostonians deserve to have walkable sidewalks and drivable streets without fear from injury or damage. Together we can make it a reality.
Should you need further information, please don't hesitate to contact my office at: mauraH@cityofboston.gov, call: 617-635-4217, or visit my website at: www.boston.potholeweb.com to report additional street and sidewalk hazards (potholes).

Thank you,

American Idol Outrage: Your Vote Doesn't Count

An in-depth look at America's most popular show reveals a seriously flawed voting system.

In reality, no phone system has the capacity to handle that kind of call volume. A logjam is inevitable and starts at the local level. AT&T, along with Telescope UK, is in charge of the Idol tabulations. "The real issue is not with the long-distance carrier network" but with jammed local phone lines, says Linda Lungo, vice president of AT&T's domestic business development.

Connect a Macintosh to Comcast Broadband

How to configure OSX (10.2) to connect to the Comcast High-Speed Internet Service.

The above FAQ from Comcast details the settings for a Mac running OS X, to be able to work on their network.

The settings are no big deal. If you already use your Mac on Ethernet networks then your settings are probably already set this way.

My mom just got an iBook. I set it up for her at home and hooked it up to my Comcast modem. No problems.

The Comcast Install Disk: Friend or Foe?
I'd read on some message boards that the disk that comes with the Comcast modem has software on it that's not needed for a Mac.

People say things like, "Oh on a Mac you just plug it in and go. Don't use the Comcast software."

Then I also read that you need to run the Comcast software to register the cable modem.

That my friends, is good advice.

Of course I was wary of running Comcast software after the nightmare of the Comcast Email wizard that changed your settings from attbi.com to comcast.net. That software, in fact, wasn't needed.

But, the software that comes with the Comcast cable modem is required.

I ran it, and it asks you to enter your customer number and your registration number. Then it goes off and connects to Comcast and sets up the cable modem.

You also get a chance to create a user name.

After you reset the modem and the Macintosh, you're online.

Video Blog Assignment: Democratic Convention

Jeff Jarvis posts this from the Bloggers' convention assignment desk:
1. Do not cover anything we can see on TV: not a single speech.
2. Do give us your perspective as a citizen: be opinionated and, when deserved, cynical.
3. Do report on the reporters: Expose the tricks of their trade.
4. Do take assignments from your readers: ask the questions the people who can't be there would ask (that, after all, is the real job of reporters, isn't it?).
5. Do not take it too seriously. This is a nonevent, a media event, a carnival. Treat it as the amusement it is.
Assignment accepted.

Massachusetts Port Authority officials are stupid

Hello... Mary?

Machines don't make mistakes, people do.

Sad parallels

Phil Zimbardo examines the Abuse of Iraqi prisoners and the Stanford Prison Experiment parallels:
Recent horrors being displayed of sexual degradation of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. military army reservists elicit direct and sad parallels between similar behavior of the "guards" in the Stanford Prison Experiment against their "prisoners."

As the guards on the night shift became ever more bored with their long 8-hour shift, they began to use the prisoners as play things
for their amusement, believing that their actions were not under surviellance during the night (they were secretly video taped for subsequent viewing). I then discovered they would get them to simulate sodomy and other homophobic behaviors.

They also stripped prisoners naked for various offenses, took away their sheets and mattresses, put them in solitary for excessive periods — all of which are mirrored in the behavior of military police in the Abu Ghraib prison outside of Bagdad. It is one reason we ended the study a week early because the guards were abusing the power in their roles, and were becoming uncontrollable by our staff.

New features I'd like to see in TypePad

I've started using TypePad to set up blogs for others.

It Gets Difficult
It gets difficult and time consuming when it's time to hand over the blog.

You've got to get the client to give you his/her credit card, billing address, mother's maiden name or place of birth.

Next you've got to recreate the design by going through all of TypePad's menus. Then you export existing posts and import them. Re-upload all your images. Go into each post and edit the image URL to point to the new URL.

Export TypeLists, import them, edit one, save it and republish to make them visible.

What I'd like to see from TypePad in a future release:
The ability to clone an existing blog to another account. This includes copying the design, content, images and TypeLists.
The ability to designate additional Account Owners who would have access to edit the design. You can only have one Account Owner now.
Give Authors the ability to Add to TypeLists. Only owners can do it now.
Give images relative URLs. They currently have a direct URL.
An easy way to upload and link to a video.
Thanks for listening.

'US soldiers abused young girl at Iraqi prison'
Mr al-Baz claims the guards at the prison were keen to take photographs of the abuse and turned it into a competition.

"They were enjoying taking photographs of the torture. There was a daily competition to see who could take the most gruesome picture.

"The winner's photo would be stuck on a wall and also put on their laptop computers as a screensaver.

His brother Rich gets up an tells it like it is:
He hadn't written anything, he said, and with the starkest honesty, he asked mourners to hold their spiritual bromides.

Jack has a creative and amazing way to look at the Red Sox season:
While watching last night's Redsox game, trying to put an ok spin on this disturbing losing streak, I came up with a new way (new to me anyway) of looking at the progress of the season. Instead of seeing it by month, or by "10% through the season now", or by before/after the All-Star break, instead how about using units that we're already very familiar with: innings.

It turns out that the 162 game season divides neatly into 9 18-game innings. We just finished game 25, so we're in the middle of the second inning -- still pretty early in the game.
This is an Internet meme in the making.
